Treating sagging breasts and 4 things you need to know

Sagging breasts (also known as breast ptosis) make women lose confidence. Sagging also has different degrees and requires different treatments. This article will help you determine if your breasts are sagging, the extent of sagging, and the available methods for addressing it.

What are sagging breasts?

Sagging breasts refer to the condition where breast tissue is not in the proper position. The breasts are loose, droopy, lack elasticity and firmness.

Causes of sagging breasts

Sagging breasts due to glands: This is the consequence of the shrinking process of the breast glands and more or less also has changes in the breast skin. Because the volume of the breast is reduced significantly, the breast tissue mass is compressed against the chest wall and lowered moderately downwards.

Sagging breasts due to skin: Due to the loss of skin elasticity as well as the support system (Cooper’s ligaments), the breast skin sags downwards, dragging the nipple position along.

Typically, breasts tend to sag over time, in addition there are factors that accelerate this process, including:

  • Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding
  • Sudden, abnormal weight changes
  • Improper use of bras
  • Bad lifestyle habits: incorrect sitting, lying, exercising postures…

Degrees of sagging

When the breasts are in balanced state, the nipples are positioned above the inframammary fold (also called the breast crease). The position of the nipples relative to the inframammary fold can determine the degree of sagging.

Sagging can be classified into four degrees:

  • Degree 1: The nipples are at the same level as the inframammary fold, the highest point of the areola is above the fold.
  • Degree 2: The nipples are below the inframammary fold, but the highest point of the areola is still above the fold.
  • Degree 3: The nipples point downwards, and the highest point of the areola is below the inframammary fold.

In addition to the three degrees mentioned above, “pseudo-ptosis” (false sagging) and “pre-ptosis” are also conditions that can negatively impact the appearance of the breasts. Pseudo-ptosis is characterized by the nipple and areola remaining at a normal degree, while the lower portion of the breast sags and lacks firmness.

Methods for addressing sagging breasts

Although sagging breasts do not affect a woman’s health, they can lead to a loss of confidence. Correcting sagging breasts helps restore the bust to its original state, making it firm and attractive, and ultimately boosting a woman’s self-esteem.

To address sagging breasts, doctors perform procedures to remove excess skin and “lift” the breasts back to their original position.

Typically, doctors will recommend a specific procedure based on the condition of your breasts. For cases involving both sagging and glandular atrophy, a combination of breast lift and implant placement may be recommended for optimal results.
