Zygoma Implant

ZYGOMA IMPLANT SOLUTION FOR MAXILLARY BONE ATROPHY PATIENTS

Dental implantation has revolutionized dentistry by providing an effective and reliable solution for tooth restoration. However, for patients with severe maxillary bone atrophy, conventional dental implants may not be a suitable option. In such cases, zygoma implants offer a ray of hope for patients to regain their aesthetic smile and chewing function.

WHAT IS A ZYGOMA IMPLANT?

Unlike conventional implants placed in the maxillary bone, zygoma implants are longer and placed at an angle. They are anchored in the cheekbone, which has a high bone density, ensuring initial stability for the implant, even in cases of significant maxillary bone loss, allowing for immediate loading.

COMPARISON BETWEEN ZYGOMA IMPLANTS AND CONVENTIONAL IMPLANTS WITH BONE GRAFTING

For patients with severe bone atrophy, the traditional approach involves bone grafting followed by the placement of conventional implants. Here is a comparison between zygoma implants and conventional implants:

  • Time: Bone grafting requires additional healing time before implant placement, prolonging the overall treatment time. Zygoma implants can provide immediate tooth restoration (immediate loading), significantly shortening the treatment time.
  • Cost: Bone grafting is an additional surgical intervention that increases the total treatment cost. Zygoma implants often eliminate the need for bone grafting, resulting in cost savings.
  • Number of surgeries: Conventional implants with bone grafting require multiple surgical procedures – one for bone grafting and another for implant placement. Zygoma implants typically require only a single surgical procedure.

TREATMENT PROCESS FOR FULL ARCH DENTAL IMPLANTS WITH ZYGOMA IMPLANTS

The exact timeline for full arch zygoma implant surgery may vary depending on each case. However, a general protocol may include the following:

  • Day 1 (Consultation and Planning): This step involves a thorough examination, X-rays, and 3D CT scans to evaluate the bone structure and plan the implant placement. Simultaneously, the patient undergoes preoperative tests and a preoperative examination by an anesthesiologist.
  • Day 2 (Surgery): Under anesthesia, zygoma implants are placed in the maxillary zygomatic bone and impressions are taken. (In some cases, temporary teeth may be attached on the same day).
  • Day 3 (Trial teeth):
  • Day 4 (Final implantation):

After approximately 6 months from the surgery date, when the implants have achieved stability in the maxillary bone, the temporary restoration will be replaced with a final restoration that provides better function and aesthetics.

WHERE CAN ZYGOMA IMPLANTS BE PERFORMED?

Placing a cheekbone implant is a complex surgical procedure that requires a highly experienced and trained surgeon in Maxillofacial Surgery. Additionally, Zygoma implant surgery should be performed under general anesthesia with the supervision of an Anesthesiologist. Therefore, this surgery should be carried out in a hospital setting to ensure patient safety.
