Some people question whether it is important to care for child’s primary teeth. Studies have shown that children with healthy primary teeth are more likely to have healthy permanent teeth. Healthy primary teeth do not only lessen the chance of pain and infections, but also hold healthy places for permanent teeth. Extraction of primary teeth often increases the need for orthodontics.
A child’s first primary teeth – usually the two lower central incisors – begin to break through the gums at about 5 to 6 months of age. After that, other teeth slowly begin to fill in until all 20 teeth have come in by the time the child when about 2 years old. At 6 years of age, permanent teeth will start to come in. Between the ages of 6 and 13, a mixture of both primary teeth and permanent teeth reside in the mouth. When primary teeth are well taken care of, this will lay a healthy foundation for permanent teeth.
When the children are more developed, guide them to brush their teeth after each meal and before going to sleep. Just like adults, children need to visit the dentist regularly. Through examination, the dentist can identify bad teeth or other teeth related issues. In addition, the dentist can track the teeth growing process of the child, to identify any anomalies such as exodontia, overcrowded teeth, gum disease, unusual jawbone structure, etc.). The dentist can then development treatment plan or preventive plan to ensure beautiful teeth going forward.
